ROCKY FORD - Police are on the lookout for a group of men who attempted to kidnap a twelve-year-old girl in Rocky Ford Monday.
It happened at about 3:30 Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of 8th St. and Sycamore Avenue in Rocky Ford. The incident has the entire community on edge, as well as the towns Police Chief, Frank Gallegos. He tells NEWSCHANNEL 13 that he has never heard of anything like this happening in the small town.
"We've stepped up patrol in the school areas, and around town," said Gallegos. "Get with your children, ask that they walk home in groups if possible."
On Monday, the twelve-year-old girl whose name has not been released was walking home from school. Then, in the middle of the day, just three houses down from her own, she was approached by four Hispanic males in a white car.
"The driver of the vehicle then exited the car and ran up behind the young lady attempting to grab at her," explained Gallegos.
Luckily, the girl was able to break free and she immediately ran home as the car sped off.
"She was very fortunate," said Gallegos.
The incident has the entire town on edge, parents are worried about letting their children walk home from school. It's an issue that the Principal of Jefferson Middle School, where the girl went to school, says will be addressed.
"It's really frightening because we see so many of our kids walk home since this is a small town," said Monica Johnson, Jefferson Middle School Principal. "Were trying to balance between having them be cautious, but not having them be so afraid that they don't feel comfortable being here."
The school held a meeting with students at the end of the day to remind students to use the buddy system and to report any suspicious activity.
