Pentagon backs onsite disposal at Pueblo Depot

Associated Press - May 13, 2009 12:44 PM ET

DENVER (AP) - Colorado Sen. Mark Udall says the Pentagon's proposed budget calls for destroying chemical weapons stored near Pueblo on site rather than shipping them elsewhere.

The Pentagon's proposed budget includes $545 million to destroy stockpiles of chemical weapons in Colorado and Kentucky. Udall and other members of Colorado's congressional delegation have fought efforts to ship the weapons at the Pueblo Chemical Depot elsewhere for disposal.

Udall says a review showed no significant savings in cost or time if the weapons were treated offsite.

About 2,611 tons of liquid mustard agent are stored at the Pueblo depot, and work has started on treatment facilities there.
