Lawyer wants charges against 'Bounty Hunter' star

Associated Press - May 29, 2009 1:34 PM ET

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - A Colorado public defender is taking the rare step of asking a judge to force prosecutors to file charges against Duane "Dog" Chapman, star of A&E Television's "Dog The Bounty Hunter."

Bill Schoewe (SHOW'-ee) filed the request Friday, alleging Chapman, a bail bondsman and others fabricated a story that a man fired a gun at them while they were filming the reality show in Colorado Springs on April 21.

A suspect was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and other violations, but prosecutors dropped the charges for lack of evidence. Schoewe defended the suspect.

Prosecutors said there was no evidence Chapman or his crew fabricated its story.

Chapman's publicist, Mona Wood, says he is in Canada and unavailable to comment. Wood says Chapman swears the man shot at his crew.
