Lt. Gov. pushing kids to spend more time outside

Associated Press - July 10, 2009 7:04 AM ET

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien is headed to Colorado Springs to continue promoting youth and the outdoors.

O'Brien is touring the state this summer to encourage youths to spend more time outdoors. The lieutenant governor says outdoorsy kids are less likely to have health problems and more likely to appreciate conservation.

Last month O'Brien visited a Rocky Mountain Youth Corps work site on a trail in Steamboat Springs. On Friday she is visiting Cheyenne Mountain State Park in Colorado Springs.

The Democratic lieutenant governor says that children spend half the time outdoors they did 20 years ago, and the childhood obesity rate has doubled in that time.
