FALCON - The jump to high school can be scary enough when you're 15 years old. Next year some students in Falcon School District 49 may be asked to do it at age 12.
Combining middle school and high schoolers at Sand Creek High School is one of the options being considered to deal with overpopulation. There is space at Sand Creek and far too many kids at Horizon and and Skyview. According to District Planner Melissa Andrews Skyview is the most crowded with enough kids to put it 45% over capacity.
There are several options on the table to deal with the overcrowding including limiting the middle schools to 7th and 8th graders. Here's a link to the options discussed by School District 49's Long Range Planning Committee.
Most parents we talked to would rather see those sixth graders remain at their elementary school for another year.
"I think it's a good idea to keep the sixth graders at their elementary school," said Lori Clevinger, a D-49 parent. "They're just not ready."
Andrews says a series of open houses on the changes to get public input are being scheduled for the end of this month.
