COLORADO SPRINGS - El Paso County voters are making sure their ballots are counted today. Many say they are especially interested in this year's election because of measure 2C.
If approved, 2C would raise the average homeowner's property taxes in Colorado Springs by $210 over a 10-year period. That is about a 16% increase.
If 2C fails, city council is targeting 35 fire department jobs and 25 police positions. Community centers, pools, and transit services could also go on the chopping block.
Supporters say the city cannot afford for 2C to fail.
"Parks, police, and the fire deparment are all real important and for a small amount of money, I think it's worth it," said Randy Nehls.
Opposers say the city needs to do a better job budgeting rather than cutting.
"Right now, the city does need some help, but this is open ended," David Krall said. "This money is gonna go on forever and where's it going?"
Issue 300 is the other ballot measure. It would phase out payments in lieu of taxes from city-owned enterprises to the city. Enterprises that don't pay property taxes include the Airport, Stormwater Enterprise, Memorial Health System, and Patty Jewett Golf Course.
Supporters of Issue 300 include Doug Bruce. They say the city's Stormwater Enterprise Fee is a tax that voters should get to decide on.
Opposers of Issue 300 have attacked Doug Bruce by saying he is trying to degrade city services.
You can still get your ballot in until 7 p.m. Tuesday. Dropoff sites in El Paso County are at Centennial Hall downtown, the DMV office at Chapel Hills Mall, and the DMV office at Powers & Airport.
