COLORADO SPRINGS - Gunshots were fired at two different houses in the same Colorado Springs neighborhood Saturday night. The first 911 calls were made just before nine o’clock, when gunshots hit the first house on Carmel Drive.
There were eight children inside that house. All of the children were under twelve years old. The youngest was only six months old.
“All of a sudden we just heard boom, boom, boom, boom,” said Patsy Archuleta, who lives in the house on Carmel Drive. “And I didn’t know what was going on.”
Seven rounds in all were fired at her house.
“One of them went into the kitchen and broke the picture,” said Archuleta. “And my husband told me to get down, get down. My daughter…she had all the little ones on the floor.”
And then it happened again…
“We received another call shortly thereafter,” said Sgt. Mark DeVorss. “Actually from Memorial Hospital in reference to another shooting that we believe is related. Two females were driving along and saw a person put a gun out the window and shoot into a house on Conosa Drive,” DeVorss said. “That same person then fired one round at their vehicle, and hit the windshield, which shattered the glass, which then they were injured from some flying glass.”
Police believe the two incidents are related.
“We do have some belief that there are some gang ties to this,” said Sgt. DeVorss.
And that doesn’t surprise Patsy Archuleta.
“There's a lot of gangs on this side of town,” said Archuleta. “A lot of gangs.”
She is planning to move out of the neighborhood.
“I'm not staying here,” Archuleta said. “I'm not going to take a chance on my kids' life.”
No one in either house was injured. But the two girls in the car were treated for injuries related to the broken glass from the shattered windshield. Police are still searching for the suspect, who they believe was driving a dark colored sedan.
