COLORADO SPRINGS- Colorado Springs will be getting its first Immigration and Customs Enforcement office by the end of November. The announcement came from Colorado Republican Congressman Doug Lamborn, Thursday.
Lamborn had been pushing to have an ICE sub-office in the Springs for two years. The congressman argued the office is important to Colorado Springs because it's the second largest city within I.C.E's Denver-area jurisdiction.
The Congressman told NEWSCHANNEL13 he wants to see I-25 cleaned-up, "we unfortunately get illegal immigration, human trafficking, drugs importation, and all these things will be investigated by the investigators from I.C.E""
County Commissioner Jim Bensberg is a big supporter of the I.C.E sub-office in the Springs. Bensberg says he worked for over four years to bring the agency to El Paso County. In addition to immigration regulation, the office may be financially positive for the Springs because it will bring 10 more jobs to the area.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Department doesn't expect to be affected by the arrival of the federal agency. Sheriff Terry Maketa says ICE was something "we should have had a long time ago," and he expects the agent's arrival to help them with some their own investigations.
