CANON CITY - A pilot/stuntman out of Denver did the unthinkable monday afternoon. 45-year-old Eric Scott flew across the Royal Gorge in his hydrogen-peroxide-powered jet pack.
Scott flew across the 1,500 ft. wide Royal Gorge in 21-seconds. Go Fast, who sponsored the event says he was traveling 75 miles per hour.
Go Fast also tells NEWSCHANNEL 13 that the pilot wasn't wearing a parachute. Meaning if something went wrong, Scott would have nothing but over 1,000 feet of jagged rocks and water below him.
"People think I'm this super crazy guy you know...that's fine, some people think that, but I'm pretty much a normal guy for the most part," said Scott just after he finished the stunt.
Whether you think he's crazy or not, theres no doubt that Eric Scott might be one of the bravest men alive. With nothing but his $200,000 dollar jet pack developed by Jet Pack International, Scott soared over the Gorge.
"This is the biggest adrenaline rush i've ever gotten," he said afterwards.
A large crowd gathered to watch the 45-year old stuntman cheat death, their reaction...all summed up with one word..."Amazing!"
The stunt has been years in the making, and still some onlookers doubted he would make it across.
"I looked at the distance and I thought no way." said Kirsten Tinker.
"It's a 1,000 foot gap so id be a fool not to have some concerns," said Scott before his flight. "You've got to plant for the worst and expect the best."
Scott not only made it across, he made it look easy.
NEWSCHANNEL 13 asked the pilot what was next for him, he reponded by holding a bottle of champagne high in the air and took a drink. "I'm not sure, I'm just going to soak this one up," he said smiling.
Eric set the record for both height and distance for anyone with a jet pack.
Jet Pack International developed the for stunts, promotions and other events for Go Fast. Both companies are based in Denver and were founded by entrepreneur Troy Widgery.
