Bennet bill would ensure funds for school clinics

Associated Press - May 1, 2009 4:14 PM ET

DENVER (AP) - Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet has a bill in the works that would make it easier for kids to receive health care at school.

Bennet, the former superintendent of Denver Public Schools, announced the plan Friday at Adams City Middle School in Commerce City.

The bill would enforce an existing federal law that reimburses school health centers nationwide for the cost of treating students covered by Medicaid.

Bennet's office says current billing procedures make it too difficult for schools to apply for reimbursement.

Bennet says the centers aren't funded properly, even though they're expected to provide health care to nearly 200,000 children in Colorado.
