This Valentines Day, instead of diamonds and chocolate, why not give the gift of life?

A Woodland Park couple is hoping people will do just that using Life Gift Cards for mammograms.

Joey Truscelli and Michelle Marte launched the cards at the beginning of January as a way for family, friends and co-workers to help someone receive important medical testing.

"we want to save lives. I mean, why not? It's a perfect opportunity to let somebody know how much you love them and how much you care and at the same time save their life," said Truscelli.

Truscelli and Marte are no strangers to breast cancer.

"Last year around Christmas, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and she was lucky enough that she had a mammogram. It caught it early," said Marte.

But Truscelli's friend Sue Voges, an Illinois state trooper, wasn't so lucky. She died from the disease after a 12-year battle.

"She always used to tell me, 'If I would've had mammograms early on and they would have caught it in stage one, I'd be hanging out with you guys,'" said Truscelli.

Truscelli said there are more than 40 million uninsured people in the United States and those with insurance may have high deductibles that force them to pay out-of-pocket for routine exam.

The Life Gift Card gives people an option and opportunity to get routine check-ups that may save their life, said Marte.

Even employers are benefiting from the cards.

"If an employee is part-time and doesn't qualify for health insurance or an employer simply can't offer it, he or she can purchase a gift card," said Truscelli.

The couple plans to add gift cards for more services in the coming months.

Currently, there are over 600,000 physicians, 5,000 hospitals and 60,000 dentists participating in the program.
