1962: After being barred from entering on Sept. 20, James Meredith becomes the first black student at the University of Mississippi. A day earlier he had been escorted onto the Ole Miss campus by U.S. marshals, setting off riots that resulted in the deaths of two students. The marshals again escorted him to his first class on Oct. 1.
