D-2 School Board Threatened With Recall Effort

Parents Want Their Voices To Be Heard Or They’ll Force Change

Parents, teachers and community leaders have had enough with the direction Harrison D-2 is heading, and they now are becoming vocal about it. On Thursday afternoon about 30 people protested outside the D-2 headquarters, an hour before the school board meeting.

One parent held a sign comparing D-2 Superintendent Mike Miles to Hitler. “We’re going to stop the madness in D-2,” said James Tucker, a community activist. He told NEWSCHANNEL 13 that the board isn’t thinking for themselves and is being controlled by Steve Shuck, a developer, who contributed to the election campaign of several board members.

“The plan is, we’re going have a recall of the board who refuse to listen to the parents of the district,” said Tucker.

As the board meeting began, parents crowed the usually empty boardroom; some people there for the first time. Several times during the meeting, parents became vocal arguing with board members about the decisions to retain Miles as superintendent and passing the Coherence Governance Policy.

“There hasn’t been a whole lot of fairness going on; we’re being told what happening and our voices aren’t being heard,” said parent Taraya Bland. She said she wants public mediation, where there can be dialog with the board and the public.

While most of the board is a target for the vocal group, some said they see board member Victor Torres as the only one they can support. Others are disappointed in how Torres is acting. “Right now I don’t think it’s right for things to be aired in the public,” said Woody Longmire, who is a patron and staff member in the district. “In the last four years I’ve seen revolutionary change; we’ve seen teachers standing up and taking responsibility,”’ said Longmire.

Teachers who’ve called NEWSCHANNEL 13 said they feel threatened by Miles and board members. Several claim jobs have been threatened if they speak out against pay for performance or any other issue in the district. Jennifer Sprague, a D-2 spokesperson, denies the allegations.

Sprague also said the district has several avenues for parents to voice their concern. She tells NEWSCHANNEL 13, most of the comments the district has been getting are positive. She claimed the majority is happy about the district excelling and being taken off academic watch by the state in October.
