MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. -- The gift shop at the Manitou Cliff Dwellings may have been hit by a team of con artists. Management said two women and a man with French accents came in Friday afternoon. Two of them went to different registers with the same odd request: to change three twenty dollar bills for a fifty and a ten.Manager Michele Hefner told NEWSCHANNEL13 that the rest happened like a magic trick, and somehow the people ended up stealing hundreds from the register."They were really loud and having trouble understanding and speaking our language," said Hefner. They somehow convinced the clerks to pull out additional money from the cash drawer."Doing a lot of pointing and just using their hands a lot and actually touching the money that came out of our cash drawer," said Hefner. At the end of the day, the registers were missing about $200 each. Hefner questioned employees and then reviewed surveillance video that showed the trios odd behavior. She said it also showed the people stealing items from the shop and scoping out a third register before leaving. She's concerned the scam could now be headed to other stores."The police officer we talked to said it could happen to anybody and these people know exactly what to do," said Hefner.
