CONSUMER ALERT: Online Job Seekers Beware

Scam Artists Are Targeting People Who Apply Online

UPDATED: 11:19 pm MDT August 29, 2010
With more than 14 million Americans unemployed, scam artists are targeting those who are looking for jobs online.

There are several red flags to watch out for when applying online:
- Never give out your bank account or Social Security number
- Don't "scan your ID." Online job applications should not need a copy of your driver's license.
- The contact email address should have a domain. It should never have an email address from a website like Yahoo! or Hotmail.
- Grammatical mistakes and misspellings in the ad.

If you think you've been hacked:
- Close all bank accounts where the scam took place.
- Order a credit report from all three credit bureaus.
- Report the company name, job posting and all contact names to the job site where you found the ad.
- Close the email address associated with the fraud.
