A welfare check by a Cañon City Police Sergeant led to a felony arrest of a confirmed gang member.

At approximately 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Cañon City Police Sergeant Robert Hill noticed a vehicle broken down in the 100 block of South 9th Street. Sergeant Hill stopped to assist the motorist and ran a routine check of the vehicles registration.

The check showed that the plates on the vehicle belonged to another vehicle. When questioned about the discrepancy, the driver's answers did not add up.

Further investigation uncovered drug paraphernalia, drugs and an illegal weapon.

29-year-old Francisco Salazar was arrested and faces charges of misuse of plates, possession of a schedule II drug, and possession of an illegal weapon. Salazar admitted to officers that he is associated with the Surenos gang and he has a lengthy criminal history.

Salazar is currently being detained at the Fremont County Detention Center. His bond has been set at $50,000.
