After son killed in skateboarding crash, mother has warning for other parents
Boy lost control on skateboard, hit his head on pavement
A Springs mother is mourning the loss of her 12-year-old son after a skateboarding accident this weekend.
The accident happened in a neighborhood near Palmer Park and Circle. The boys heartbroken mother has a message she wants every parent to hear.
"It happened instantly. He didn't have to suffer. Maybe if he had helmet on, he would still be here with us today. I didn't have enough time," said Angela Jones.
Jones said her son Charlie would have turned 13 this July.
"I felt in my heart something bad had happened," she said. Jones said Charlie had invited a friend over on Saturday. They both left to ride their skateboards when Charlie lost control on a hill and crashed.
"I just think he hit a curb, we'll wait for an autopsy to know the exact cause of death," Jones said.
She said she always worried about letting him have a skateboard and finally let him buy one last month.
Since the accident, she has been surrounded by a large support team of family and friends. But she is still not sure how she will cope with the loss of her youngest son.
"It's going to be hard for me to pick up the pieces," she said.
A candlelight vigil is being planned for Charlie. The family is also working to set up a memorial fund.
