COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

Dozens of rabbits were found abandoned along the side of Mark Dabling Boulevard in Northwest Colorado Springs Sunday night.

A large group of concerned citizens worked throughout the night to get the rabbits out of the freezing cold.

Our calls to the Humane Society were not immediately returned but they issued a statement on Monday.

In their statement, the Human Society of the Pikes Peak Region says:

"An anonymous call was made to Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) Sunday evening regarding stray rabbits on Mark Dabling Road. The number of rabbits was not clearly stated, and an Animal Law Enforcement Officer did not understand the severity of the situation. Because the Officer did not understand it was an emergency situation, the determination was made to follow up the next day. HSPPR apologizes for not responding immediately as we care deeply for animals in our community and make every effort to respond to the 58,000 plus calls received a year with diligence and compassion. A $500 reward is being offered for any tip that leads Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region Animal Law Enforcement to a summons or arrest in this case."

Colorado Springs police did not have any information about the situation.
