The gun used by Evan Ebel in Texas has been identified as the same gun used in the shooting death of Tom Clements, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office announced Monday.
The Colorado Springs Metro Crime Lab completed the analysis of shell casings collected in Texas by El Paso County Sheriff's Office investigators. The confirmation goes well beyond acknowledging the same caliber and brand of ammunition being used, but rather is based on unique and often microscopic markings left on the casings at both scenes, investigators said.
Investigators are trying to determine whether Ebel acted alone in the shooting of Tom Clements or if others were involved.
Clements, Colorado's top prisons official, was killed at his home Tuesday night in El Paso County. He is survived by a wife and two daughters.
Ebel was killed in a gunfight with Texas authorities on Thursday. Ebel had been a member of the 211s, a white supremacist prison gang in Colorado.
