Fans say Wasson High School's last home basketball game bittersweet
Fans at Wasson High School's last home basketball game on Saturday night said it was a bittersweet moment for the school.
Packed stands and a loud crowd watched the team beat Greeley Central 78-61 in the state tournament's Sweet 16 game.
The D-11 School Board voted 6-1 in February to close Wasson High School and two elementary schools in May.
Wasson High School sophomore Chase Bess brought extra school spirit to the game. He painted his face in honor of the school's last home basketball game in the Thunder Dome.
This year's basketball team has an almost perfect record. It's only lost one game this season. Wasson High School principal Darryl Bonds stood courtside for the game.
"It's an outstanding atmosphere especially to have these fans to support Wasson in the last home game that will ever be played here," said Bonds.
He said this year's team is the best team he's seen at the school. He said their success has boosted school morale. He said it was an emotional night.
"Anytime you think of it being the last time there's going to be a basketball game or any of the lasts that we're going to have, it does make you really sad," said Bonds.
It was a bittersweet game for Wasson High School cheerleader Tiffany Longest. The junior will be cheering for a different team next year.
"It makes me sad because I don't want to start over for another team, you know? And then learning all the new cheers again, and all the new people," said Longest. "I feel like it would be hard to stop saying 'Go T-Birds!'"
Larry McDanel camped out front row for his grandson's last home game. His grandson is a senior on the team.
"I think you can tell by the stands here tonight, and last night, this place was packed. It just adds fuel to us, to the players," said McDanel.
It was free admission for Wasson students and faculty to make sure everyone who wanted to could attend.
