PUEBLO, Colo. -

One person is dead and a police officer has been hospitalized after a shooting in Pueblo Wednesday morning.

The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office received a report of a man on a bicycle who was firing shots at car windows in the area of Hollywood Dr. and Canterbury Lane just before 7 a.m. Wednesday.

A responding Pueblo Police officer found Edward Valdez III at a local business in the 2000 block of Columbia Dr. Police said Valdez fired at the officer multiple times. The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office said in a press release that they determined the gun was a "bb" gun.

Valdez reportedly shot the officer twice, hitting him once in the head. The officer then returned fire and shot the suspect according to the PCSO. Mary Valdez, Edward's grandmother, said he was shot 8 times in the torso.

"If they have any camera, I want to see the footage... and I want to see my grandson point a gun at the officer because I don't think he did that," said Mary. "I don't think he would have done that. I don't think he would have shot him."

Valdez' grandparents said Edward received the gun as a birthday present a year ago for his birthday and believe he found it Wednesday morning while searching for another item. They called him a "good boy" who took a few extra years to complete high school because of a disability in which he acted younger than his age.

"He would have never hurt anyone," said Mary Valdez. "He was very meek and mild and very soft spoken and never raised his voice and always did everything you told him."

Police gave a different account of Edward Valdez. Police Chief Luis Velez said Valdez resisted arrest and was shot because he took aim at a police officer with a "real looking" bb gun. Valdez was declared dead at the scene.

The officer, who has yet to be identified, was taken to St. Mary-Corwin Emergency room where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The pellet was removed from the officer's head.

A Critical Incident Team (CIT) has been established to investigate the incident. The CIT consists of the Pueblo Police Department, Pueblo County Sheriff's Office, Colorado State Patrol and the 10th Judicial District Attorney's Office.
