Police arrest teen accused of killing Ft. Carson couple
Macyo January found at Colorado Springs apartment
The Colorado Springs teenager accused of murdering a Fort Carson soldier and the soldier's pregnant wife was captured at an apartment complex Thursday.
Police tracked down Macyo January, 17, at the Vistas at Citadel apartments on east Bijou Street off of Academy Boulevard. January is the only suspect in the killings of 37-year-old David Dunlap and 35-year-old Whitney Butler.
"This case was such a senseless violent crime that it really rocked our detectives to the core," said Colorado Springs police spokesperson Barbara Miller. "They've been working around the clock since Monday to identify the suspect and ultimately arrest him."
Police said Dunlap and Butler were shot to death when they walked in on a burglary at their home on Bassett Drive around noon Monday.
Miller said "a lot of investigative work, skill and knowledge" led homicide detectives to January, and that officers hadn't gotten a tip from the public.
Residents said they were told to leave the Vistas complex Thursday, and officers swarmed the area as they attempted to arrest January.
"There were police, SWAT, paramedics, all that," said resident Antonio Arbogast.
Arbogast said he watched SWAT officers throw a flash bang into the apartment where January and his friends were.
"I hit the floor when the flash bang went off," he said. "It went on for about an hour, hour and a half."
Police said January didn't put up a struggle. He's facing first-degree murder charges and police said he'll likely be charged as an adult.
Police said there were three men with January at the apartment who were also arrested. Police said those people had warrants out unrelated to the double homicide.
Dunlap and Butler were recently married and had moved into their home in October. Friends told KRDO Newschannel 13 that Butler was expecting her first child.
Dunlap was a Staff Sergeant and helicopter mechanic for Fort Carson's combat aviation brigade. Ft. Carson said a memorial service is planned for next week.
