Suspect arrested in Colo. Springs shootout
Man shot twice, gunfire exchanged between vehicles
Colorado Springs police have arrested one person after a night of violence on the city's southeast side.
As many as 30 reports of shots fired poured into the Colorado Springs 911 dispatch center around 8:45 p.m. Thursday.
When it was over, an unidentified man had been shot twice and was taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment. Police seized one of two vehicles believed to be involved, and a gun.
Sgt. Darrin Abbink said people in two vehicles, one blue and one white, began arguing with each other while they were traveling.
Abbink said the vehicles stopped at the intersection of Doherty and Lancaster Drives and that's where shots were fired.
On Friday, police announced that they arrested 19-year-old Denzel Sanchez on charges of attempted first degree murder.
Investigators say that Sanchez was the driver of a car and was chasing his ex-girlfriend who was with another man in a separate vehicle. Police believe that a passenger in Sanchez' car shot at Sanchez' ex. The passenger in Sanchez' car was then shot and injured, according to investigators.
Abbink said three people in the victim's car were taking him to a hospital when they waved down an ambulance near the intersection of Fountain Boulevard and Circle Drive. That ambulance took the victim to Memorial. His condition wasn't available late Thursday, but police said he has non-life-threatening injuries.
Colby Boling saw the shooting happen. He said he was moving into a new home near the intersection at the time.
"I saw a blue vehicle pull in," he said. "The other car came and blocked him in, and I heard them yelling at each other. I looked out, and then I heard gunshots. That's when I heard the gunshots. I saw the muzzle flashes, the firing out the windows. I got my wife inside."
Boling said both vehicles drove away after the gunfire.
"I've never been so close to something like this," he said. "I'm from a small town. But I'll be all right."
Abbink said police know where the blue vehicle is. He said they will talk with people associated with it, to determine what started the argument and who shot the victim.
