Police have uncovered what could be a child prostitution ring in Southern Colorado.
On Saturday, they arrested 20-year-old Trevor Baker on multiple felony charges including pimping of a child, pandering of a child, keeping a place of child prostitution and inducement of child prostitution, and DUI.
Baker had an advisement hearing on Wednesday. TARGET 13 approached him for comment, but all he would say was, "I didn't do it."
So far, there is one alleged victim in the case, a 16-year-old. According to a restraining order request from that girl's mother, the girl met Baker through a friend. The mother said Baker posted escort ads for her daughter on backpage.com, then drove her to motels to have sex with men. The mother said Baker collected the money.
On Thursday, KRDO NewsChannel 13 obtained the arrest affidavit for Baker. In the affidavit, police explain that Baker read and waived his Miranda Rights. Baker went on to tell police about how he and a 16-year-old girl whom he met at a party came up with a prostitution plan. Baker said that he and the girl had become best friends and were looking for a way to make money. He also claimed that he did not know the girl was 16 years old because she had told him she was 18.
Baker told police that he and the girl created an advertisement on the website backpage.com. Through the site, the pair connected with three separate men who each paid $150 to have sex with the girl for 30 minutes. Baker says that in their advertisement, the girl's age was listed at 19.
During the encounters, Baker would stay nearby for the girl's protection. Then they would split the money evenly. Baker told police that another one of his female friends found out about the prostitution plan and wanted to take part. That 19-year-old set up her own advertisement on backpage.com, according to Baker, and was awaiting her first customer at a motel when Baker was arrested by police. Police were tipped off to the prostitution plan by the 16-year-old girl's mother.
Police arrived at the Travel Lodge near US 24 and 31st Street and observed Baker and the 16-year-old girl in a car. They also found marijuana in his car.
According to his Facebook page, Baker is a local DJ who goes by "Trevo," and is originally from Memphis, Tenn. He remains out on bond.
"I think there's a good possibility it's bigger," said Betty Edwards, who heads the Human Trafficking Task Force of Southern Colorado. "It will be interesting to see if this ties into pimps in this area and in Denver."
Edwards said in these types of cases, there's usually more than one girl and pimps who are working together. She said the girls involved are often at-risk youth.
"It's not because, 'I just think I'll go out today and be a prostitute,'" said Edwards. "It's because there's abuse in the home, they've been mistreated, they're homeless."
She said, while some might think child prostitution isn't something that happens in Southern Colorado, that's not the case.
"Not from what we've heard from people and some girls themselves," Edwards said. "It happens."
TARGET 13 found out two woman have been granted temporary restraining orders against Baker. One is 40 years old and the other is 16 years old, likely the alleged victim in the case.
