ALAMOSA, Colo. -

Alamosa County Sheriff Dave Stong says rising jail costs are making it cheaper to send prisoners to other facilities.

In 2012, the county's public safety expenses rose to just under $3.3 million, a 14 percent increase over the year before.
On any given day now, the Alamosa County Detention Center houses about 90 detainees, and it's farming another 30 inmates on average out to jails in Conejos, Costilla, Chaffee and Bent counties.
Stong tells the Alamosa Valley Courier it's actually cheaper to send prisoners to the other facilities at a daily cost of $40 per inmate.
