1 killed, 3 seriously hurt in crash

A Colorado Springs woman was killed and 3 others seriously hurt after a crash on Interstate-25 just south of Walsenburg.

State patrol said all four people were traveling in a 2000 Dodge Durango Friday evening when the tread separated from the left rear tire. The driver lost control and the Durango went off the side of the interstate and rolled several times.  All four people inside the car were ejected, according to state patrol officials.

Bernadette Scott, 33, of Colorado Springs was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by the Huerfano County coroner.

Breanna Ortiz, 20, Viktoria Flores, 20, and Tawnya Schaus, 20 were seriously injured and transported to separate hospitals, officials said.

Investigators said that none four of the victims were wearing seat belts.  Officials said a tire malfunctions is thought to be the cause of the accident, although it is being investigated.
