20 homeless after 3 alarm apartment fire

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A fire at the Retreat at Austin Bluffs Apartments, 4615 Hinsdale Way in Colorado Springs, forced the evacuation of 12 units and displaced 20 residents.

The fire was reported at 10:13 p.m. on Sunday, October 6, 2013.

Everyone was able to safely get out of the building, and no one was hurt. Two nearby buildings were also evacuated.

When firefighters arrived, they reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the third story of the building. Firefighters fought the flames from outside because it was not safe to go inside the building.

Seven fire engines, four fire trucks, the hazmat unit, the heavy rescue unit and five support apparatus were dispatched to the three alarm fire. A total of 58 firefighters were dispatched to fight the flames and provide medical care if anyone was hurt.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Red Cross and the company that manages the apartment complex are helping the displaced residents find housing.
