Human and animal veterans being thanked at Piñon Valley Elementary

Carlos the War Dog making an appearance

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo - Very important Veterans and a very important military veteran dog were making kids and adults smile on this Veterans Day.  Piñon Valley Elementary was holding its observance to honor the people and others who kept America safe and free.

Carlos the War Dog was one of the guests at the school.  He's the strong silent type when it comes to interviews.  His forever handler is Ruby Ridpath.  She tells me that, "It's moments like this that makes me want to cry.  The service of not only Carlos but all of our war dogs is so appreciated.  Children understand the role that war dogs play to save lives."  Carlos was in Iraq and Afghanistan saving American lives by spotting explosives so they wouldn't go off.  I introduced you to Carlos last April in a Wear Red Friday Hero segment.  Carlos is also the 2013 American Humane Association Military Hero Dog of the Year.

The students were so surprised when they heard about how Carlos made a difference for our military.  They didn't know he was a dog until the end of the presentation.

The human element of the military was just as appreciated by everyone at this assembly.  Brigadier General Michael Bills at Fort Carson was the guest speaker of this event.  He told me this is a special day for veterans, active and retired, "It means a lot to me that these young kids understand what veterans mean to them.  It touches my heart in a large way. I'm very thankful for what they have done in this assembly to honor veterans."
