Chase through El Paso County ends in Colorado Springs

Suspect was wanted on a DOC warrant

New information on suspect in high speed chase

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A high-speed chase through several El Paso county towns ended at the edge of Colorado Springs.

Colorado State Patrol and Limon police were chasing a green Mercury through most of the 3 o'clock hour. Speeds reached up to 100 miles per hour.

The chase began with a routine traffic stop in Limon, 73 miles from Colorado Springs.

Ira Smith, 28, was identified as the driver.

A Department of Corrections spokesperson tells KRDO NewsChannel 13 that Smith was wanted on a DOC warrant for walking away from a community corrections facility in Colorado Springs on Sept. 19.  Smith was sentenced to five years in prison on theft and escape charges. He was transferred to the facility, which is run by a probation board, in May.

According to Colorado Springs police, the car being chased hit the back of one of it's cruisers at Highway 24 and Marksheffel Road around 4 p.m. The car was attempting to make a turn from the highway onto Marksheffel, jumped the median and also hit a red Jeep.

Both the officer, identified by CSPD as Ofc. Listul, and Smith were taken to the hospital. CSPD said both suffered minor injuries.

Police said meth was also found on Smith.

The crash caused severe traffic backups for about one hour.

Police said Smith could be charged with careless driving and crashing into a peace officer along with several other charges.

Although the chase spanned into El Paso County, Limon PD and Colorado State Patrol did not request assistance from the El Paso County Sheriff's Office or the Colorado Springs Police Department.

Officers with CSPD and the sheriff's office were notified of the chase and each department said they decided not to pursue the suspect.

"We did what we could to warn drivers on the roadway so they could be safeguarded as the pursuit passed through those general areas," said Lt. Jeff Kramer with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
