El Paso County emergency notification changes

El Paso County emergency notification changes

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - It's hard to forget the images of fires and flooding in Southern Colorado over the last few years.

El Paso County has a system that will call you if severe weather threatens.

Getting the word out is the job of the people at the El Paso Teller 9-1-1 center in Colorado Springs.

"They can take 9-1-1 calls here and they can send emergency notifications," said Ben Bills, the Public Information Officer for the El Paso Teller 9-1-1 system.

But the system that the county uses to send those notifications is different.  That means that even if you signed up for those notifications before, you'll have to do it again.

Bills said, "they all use different log-in screens and different web sites to interact with their own system."

The county is trying to clean up its records to make sure that the notifications go out only to those that need them.

"What we don't want to do is to we don't want to harass the public or annoy the public by giving them a whole bunch of flood warnings for Fountain Creek when they live in Calhan," said Bills.

It takes a few minutes to do, but signing up for notifications is worth that few minutes of your time.

It's not just floods and fires.  The system can also let you know about other things such as police standoffs.  Reaching as many people as possible was its goal, and if all goes well, the system will have another way to do that soon.

"We are definitely interested in how it interacts with social media and we're interested in having something like that in the future," said Bills.

That way notifications will go to where people go in the digital age to keep them safe.

You can go to the county website to sign up for the emergency notification system or you can get alerts on severe weather by signing up for our exclusive WeatherCall system on the Weather page.
