Giron recall organizer announces run for county clerk

PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo. - A plumber turned activist has his eyes set on a seat in Pueblo politics.

Victor Head, 29, announced Tuesday he's running for Pueblo County Clerk and Recorder. He spearheaded the recall efforts to remove Angela Giron from her state Senate seat.

"When it started, there was not a thought in my mind that I would be running for office," he said. "I had stayed out of politics."

Head said he decided to run after he was troubled by what he saw during the 2013 recall election. He claims he saw election judges looking at peoples' ballots. In addition, he didn't understand why people who had died were being sent voter ID cards.

"I'm sure there are issues that have persisted for a while but when I saw it, it kind of blew me away. I couldn't really believe that that's how sloppy the ballots are thrown around, so to speak," Head said.

Pueblo County Clerk and Recorder Gilbert Ortiz is seeking reelection in November.

"I think I've been a very passionate election reformer for the state of Colorado," he said.

Ortiz has been county clerk for nearly eight years. If elected, Head said he'd set a term limit on the position. In previous years, a term limit existed for Pueblo County clerk.

Ortiz said, "Once you get somebody trained and doing the job correctly with ethics and integrity, why wouldn't you want to keep that person instead of training somebody else to do that position?"

Democrats outnumber Republicans by 2-1 in Pueblo County. When asked if he thought he stood a chance, Head laughed while pointing to the recall results.

"Honestly, I don't think party has anything to do with fair elections. That's why I think I stand a chance," Head said.

Head organized a recall campaign last spring after he was upset that Giron voted in favor of stricter gun laws. Voters ousted Giron from her seat last November by a 56-44 margin.
