New Red Cross flood app

Red Cross Flood App

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Anyone in the U.S. can use the app, but it hits close to home in Colorado.

"Think about how your life was if you were affected by the floods and fires of last year. Are you better off now? Because you can be," said Bill Fortune, with the American Red Cross.

Disaster experts from around the world have put together this brand new flood app.

"This could actually save your life," said Fortune.

It gives you instant access to local and real-time information. So you know what to do before, during and after a flood.

"Think about what you would do during a disaster go to this app. It will help you talk through those steps and help design a kit for you and your family. We know that about 85 percent of the American population is not ready for a natural disaster on any given day," said Fortune.

Critical action steps are all ready on your phone, and you don't even have to have internet access. The app even has a toolkit with flashlight, strobe light and audible alarm to let others know where you are.

"It allows you to connect to people. It allows you to say I'm okay to your family," said Fortune.

But don't wait for disaster to strike to open the new app. It's designed to prepare you and help you survive.

"It might take you 15 minutes, 20 minutes to build a kit that's good enough to you to evacuate your home. But do it now, don't wait until the smoke is coming in your house or the water is rising, do it now. We have to be ready and the Red Cross goal for Colorado is to be the best prepared state in the nation," said Fortune.

The new flood app, along with the Red Cross Wildfire app can be found in the Apple app store and the Google Play store. Just search "American Red Cross."
