Signatures counted, Sen. Giron will face recall election

DENVER - Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gossler says the group pushing to recall Senate District 3 Sen. Angela Giron has collected enough valid signatures to force a recall election.

The Democrat from Pueblo is facing recall for voting in support of a package of gun-control measures that Gov. John Hickenlooper signed into law earlier this year.

A total of 13,466 signatures were turned in to the secretary of state's office on June 10. Of those, 818 were rejected, while 12,648 were accepted as valid.  To force an election, 11,285 valid signatures were needed.

Under Colorado law, any eligible elector can file a protest with the secretary of state within 15 days to challenge the validity of the petitions. After that, it's up to the governor to schedule an election.
