Broadmoor area petition drive gains strength
More than 160 signatures gathered
A petition drive opposing a proposed improvement plan in the Broadmoor area has already exceeded its goal of 100 signatures.
The petition had 167 signatures as of Friday evening. The petition seeks to convince the southwest Colorado Springs resort to stop its proposal to build and renovate facilities as part of its centennial celebration in 2018.
Part of the plan includes closing West Cheyenne Mountain Boulevard between Mirada Road and Penrose Boulevard. The Broadmoor seeks city approval for the closing because the road cuts through the resort's golf course.
A city councilman said closing the road and improving the golf course might make the city more attractive for major golf tournaments that would bring millions of dollars in revenue.
However, many Broadmoor residents object to the proposal, partly because they say the road is a convenient shortcut and offers one of only three routes out of the area in case of a wildfire or other emergency.
An estimated 500 people attended a public meeting Tuesday evening at Broadmoor Hall. More meetings are scheduled.
