COLORADO SPRINGS - VDARE will no longer be hosting a conference in Colorado Springs next year.
The Cheyenne Mountain Resort sent out the following statement on Wednesday:
Cheyenne Mountain Resort will not be hosting the VDARE Foundation in April of next year. We remain committed to respecting the privacy of guests at the resort.
On VDARE.com, it also confirms the cancellation. It also says that registered attendees will receive a refund.
VDARE was described by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a white nationalist hate group. It was supposed to hold a 3-day conference at the Resort in April of 2018.
We do not know whether it was the backlash from the public or just the company's decision to cancel the conference.
A petition was created to stop the event from happening. It was only up for four days and had over 4,000 signatures.
Mayor John Suthers also released a statement:
“Businesses need to make their own decisions in situations like this, and in doing so, consider both the business and community impacts of hosting disruptive groups."
In previous remarks, Suthers would not condemn the group's presence.
"The City of Colorado Springs does not have the authority to restrict freedom of speech, nor to direct private businesses like the Cheyenne Mountain Resort as to which events they may host."
