Colder temps bring plumbing problems in COS

COLORADO SPRINGS - The first major winter blast of the season threatens to cause a lot of problems for homeowners around Colorado Springs.

The experts at Affordable Plumbing and Heat tell us they expect an onslaught of calls for broken pipes over the next few days.

They say a few simple tips can prevent a disaster including:

  • Keep your cabinet doors open to allow air surrounding the pipes to circulate
  • Drip water from faucets near exterior walls but don't use hot water

“We don't recommend that you run hot water. Hot water has a tendency to freeze a lot quicker than cold water does. So to prevent houses from flooding, preventative maintenance is the best key,” said Brandon Vanderwalker.

Stores like Ace Hardware were busy all day Tuesday with shoppers stocking up on cold weather supplies.
Heaters, ice melters, and snow shovels were among the most popular items.
