COLORADO SPRINGS - There has been such an outpour of support and love from the community for Lieutenant Jim Downing that his family has decided to hold a visitation for the public to attend and show their respect.
It will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the Shrine of Remembrance located at 1730 E Fountain Blvd.
LT. Downing was well-known in southern Colorado as an author and military activist. He was the second oldest survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941. He joined the navy when he turned 19 and served as Gunner's First Mate on the USS West Virginia.
When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Downing risked his life and limb to spray water on ammunition to prevent an explosion.
