28-year-old woman killed in crash on I-25 near S. Academy exit

3-year-old in serious condition

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado State Patrol says 28-year-old Shara Cardenas, of Colorado Springs, was killed in a single-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon.

Cardenas was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu in the left lane of southbound I-25 around 4 p.m. when troopers say the vehicle drifted onto the left shoulder and the front left of the car collided with a metal guardrail. Cardenas then steered abruptly to the right and the vehicle went across both southbound lanes then the front of the Malibu hit a hillside, causing it to roll over.

Cardenas, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 3-year-old child, who was in a safety seat, survived, but suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

The crash shut down southbound I-25 for several hours and was reopened just before 7 p.m.
