EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. - Former El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa's defense team wrapped up its case without calling Maketa to the stand.
His voice was the sole one missing as 24 other people testified against him in the case.
"It's not unusual for a defendant not to testify," criminal defense attorney Jeremy Loew said. "It really can hurt more than it can help."
Loew said it's a good move by the defense team to advise Maketa to not take the stand.
"It insulates Sheriff Maketa from the cross-examination of the prosecution where they can throw different curveballs at him," Loew said.
Jury deliberations will resume at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
