MLK day events in Southern Colorado

Thousands of people in Southern Colorado will gather today to honor the life of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Below is a breakdown of events by city:

Colorado Springs:

-          Southern Colorado Ministerial Union service -- At 7 p.m. Monday, the Southern Colorado Ministerial Union will host its annual service honoring Martin Luther King Jr. at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, 5485 Alegre Dr. The event is open to the public.

-          Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble -- At 7 p.m. on January 23 at the Kathryn Mohrman Theatre, 14 E. Cache La Poudre St., Colorado College will host the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, which will perform a body of work inspired by the African-American experience. The event is free and open to the public.

·         All People’s Breakfast – Colorado College will hold a meal and parade to honor MLK Day. This year’s theme is "It Still Starts with Me: A Call to Action.” The breakfast begins at 8 a.m. at the El Pomar Sports Center, 44 W. Cache La Poudre St. Tickets are $7. After, organizers will hold a March for Hope starting at 10 a.m. from the Earle Flagpole on Worner Quad to Acacia Park.

·         Care and Share to host volunteer event – to honor Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy of helping others, the food bank is putting service into action. More than 150 volunteers signed up for the event.


·         3rd Annual MLK Program and Meal – will begin with a march at noon from the Rawlings Library to the El Pueblo Museum. The event is sponsored by the Pueblo Ministerial Fellowship and The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Heritage Center and Museum.

Also remember, many government offices will be closed.

·         Sports Office and Therapeutic Recreation Programs at Memorial Park
