Reverse 911 alerts: Are you registered?

Reverse 911 Importance

COLORADO SPRINGS - Two armed criminals causing immediate danger to Colorado Springs communities prompted two reverse 911 alerts this week.

Dispatchers say just receiving these alerts is crucial.

"The information given to you in an emergency 911 could be a life or death situation," explained Ben Bills, El Paso County 911 Authority Public Information Officer.

The 911 Authority sends out about 50 alerts per year. However, you must be registered to receive them.

"I know some people think that where amber alerts and weather notifications come from, they come from us — that's actually completely separate," Bills said.

The alerts immediately instruct people on the best course of action in times of danger.
