COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A woman who says Gustavo Marquez is the father of her two-month-old son tells KRDO NewsChannel 13 that Marquez was dating one of the teens he's now accused of killing.
The woman, who says she dated Marquez for 2 1/2 years before they broke up two months ago, did not want her identity made public. She says that Marquez, 19, was dating victim Natalie Partida, 16, when she and her close friend Derek Greer, 15, were killed. Their bodies were found March 12 along Old Pueblo Road, south of Fountain. She said Marquez only knew Greer as a friend of Partida.
KRDO NewsChannel 13 has so far been unable to confirm the relationship between Partida and Marquez with Partida's family, but as we first reported Monday night, Partida and Marquez were friends on Facebook.
When asked about who Gustavo Marquez is as a person, his ex said he is a good guy who worked as a roofer. She said he was studying to be a medical assistant. She also said that he is not in a gang and that his facial tattoos reflect aspects of his personal life.
KRDO NewsChannel 13 also asked the woman about attempted kidnapping and child abuse charges that were filed against Marquez late last month. She said the charges stem from a February 24 incident in which he slammed her against his car while trying to take her and the baby with him.
The arrest document in that case supports the ex-girlfriend's story. However, Marquez was released from jail after posting a bond of $5,000.
Despite that incident, she says she never thought Marquez was capable of committing the kind of crime he now stands accused of.
Another ex-girlfriend who contacted KRDO NewsChannel 13 said Marquez was a troubled kid whom she broke up with in high school because he went to jail for crimes such as fighting and breaking into houses.
The second girlfriend, who also wanted to remain anonymous, said that Marquez contacted her the night that Partida and Greer were found dead. She said he asked her to hang out and go watch a movie because he was stressed and wanted to get out of the house. They did not meet up, however, she said.
Regarding his tattoos, she said the teardrops represent family members who have died and that he told her he got the Santa Muerte tattoo because he feels as if he is already dead because he has been in trouble with the law so many times in his life.
Partida's parents were unavailable for comment Tuesday. Greer's parents said they'd heard rumors of a relationship between Marquez and Partida but were unable to confirm it. Other friends of Marquez said they weren't aware of a relationship.
Greer's parents said they're thankful that Marquez is in custody. He has an infant son with his ex-girlfriend and an infant daughter with another woman.
"I don't know what to think," the ex-girlfriend told KRDO NewsChannel 13 by phone. "It's a surprise. I never thought he was capable of something like (this)."
