Plea deal possible for Monument menacing suspect

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. - El Paso County prosecutors are pursuing a plea deal with the Mt. Herman Trail menacing suspect, Daniel Nations.

In court Friday, prosecutors asked for a plea which was countered by Nations' public defender. 4th Judicial District Attorney Dan May will respond to the defense's counter-offer on January 3 at 10 a.m.

Nations is charged with Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender, Misdemeanor Assault, Felony Menacing, and Felony Reckless Endangerment.

Nations first came across Colorado law enforcement radar back in September. He was arrested in Woodland Park for a possession of a weapon charge. The vehicle he was driving fit the description of the one connected to menacing reports on the Mt. Herman in El Paso County.

Around the same time of Nations' arrest, cyclist Tim Watkins was found murdered in the area of the Mt. Herman Trail. Investigators have not confirmed whether there is a connection between Daniels and Watkins' death.

Indiana officers traveled to Colorado to question Nations as a person of interest in the homicides of two teens in Delphi, Ind. They left without any solid evidence against him but did not say whether he was crossed off their suspect list.

Nations is currently being held in the El Paso County Jail on a $9,300 bond. Nations’ public defender could not be reached for comment Friday afternoon.
