Police: Child abuse suspect hit house with axe, claimed to be God

CANON CITY, Colo. - A man and woman are facing child abuse and other charges after a bizarre incident in Cañon City earlier this week.

The police department says it received a call at 8:25 Wednesday morning about someone trying to break into a house with an axe.

When officers arrived, they spoke through a closed door with Robert Dille, 29, and Amanda Byrom, 28.

Police say that at first the pair refused to come out of the house and that both claimed Dille was God. They say both Dille and Byrom seemed paranoid and agitated, and were afraid the officers were going to hurt them.

When the pair finally did come out of the house, they were carrying a small child. A witness told police that he saw Dille hitting the side of a nearby house with an axe before officers arrived.

Dille and Byrom were arrested on multiple charges, including reckless endangerment and child abuse. Dille also faces a charge of criminal mischief. Both have posted bond.
