A cold case investigation unit has been formed in Fremont County with retired law enforcement officers.
Three retired law enforcement professionals are volunteering their time and expertise to team up with the Fremont County Sheriff's Office, Canon City Police Department and Florence Police Department to investigate several Fremont County unsolved homicide cases dating back to 1971, according the Fremont County Sheriff's Office.
The formation of the Homicide Cold Case Unit is modeled after other programs around the country designed to assist law enforcement agencies already strapped by limited resources.
New technology such as DNA testing has also provided an additional tool to assist in examining evidence and pursuing possible leads.
Retired Canon City Police Chief Dan Schull, retired El Paso County Sheriff's Office Bureau Chief Tim Schull and retired Department of Corrections Criminal Investigations Unit Investigator John Lutenberg bring over 95 years of law enforcement experience to the unit at no cost to tax payers as all three detectives will provide their services on a voluntary basis.
Anyone who feels they may have information on an unsolved homicide case should call the Combined Investigations Response Team at 719-276-5290 or 719-276-5612.
