Springs police search for murder suspect

Police investigate the city's 26th homicide

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado Springs Police are searching for a 17-year-old in connection to a deadly stabbing on Chelton Road.

The stabbing happened in the early morning hours of Monday, October 14, 2013.

Police say an arrest warrant has been issued for Avery James Jackson, age 17. Jackson is facing first degree murder charges.

Jackson is not in custody and police are asking for anyone who knows where he might be to give them a call at 719-444-7000.

The stabbing was reported at around 2 a.m. When officers arrived, they found a 34-year-old man with stab wounds. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police interviewed neighbors in the 100 block of Chelton Road. They focused their attention on a specific home and took photos in and around the home.

Melisiekay Williams grew up on the street. Her mom lives a few doors down from the crime scene.

"Nothing like this has ever happened," said Williams.

She said it's a safe neighborhood but it does make her worry.

"In recent years there has been crime activity on opposite sides (of my mom's home) -- on Pikes Peak Avenue, Bijou Street, the surrounding areas. I haven't been worried about this particular block, but it does make you wonder," said Williams.

If the coroner rules the death as a homicide, it would be the 26th in Colorado Springs this year.  There were 19 homicides at this time last year. There were 22 homicides total in 2012.
