Truck stolen from designated drivers

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UPDATE: The soldiers' truck was recovered the day after this story ran.

Two Ft. Carson soldiers trying to help the community now need some help in return. The pair, a couple, was volunteering as designated drivers when their truck was stolen.

The car theft happened close to 1 a.m. Friday in the Denny's parking lot on Bijou Street in downtown Colorado Springs.

It was the couple's first night working with Designated Driver of Colorado Springs, an organization that gives free rides home to those who need them, and even gets people's cars home with them too.

"My volunteers are absolutely amazing people," said Nonie Rispin, the founder of the program. "They come out from 10 o'clock at night until three or four in the morning for the sole purpose of keeping everyone in the community safe. Here (the couple is), their first night ready to do this and something like this happens. It's just frustrating."

Rispin said the couple just moved to Colorado Springs to be a part of Ft. Carson's aviation brigade.

"I want these folks to know that this is not the community of Colorado Springs. That their first experience here does not represent what this community is all about," said Rispin.

The soldiers, who didn't want to be interviewed, told Rispin that, despite what happened, they still want to volunteer and give rides.

"They text me after all this and say, 'Nonie, don't worry. Even though our first night didn't go real well, we'll be back," said Rispin.

The stolen truck is a maroon-colored 2011 Dakota Big Horn Crew Cab. It has Alabama license plates, and the number is 19B23P8.

Anyone with information should contact Colorado Springs police at 444-7000.
