Evans Elementary School Evacuated For Small Fire

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo - Evans Elementary School in Colorado Springs will be closed on Wednesday after a fire late Tuesday monrning in a bathroom.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office said this is an arson investigation and that a student is the suspect.

The school is located in Falcon District 49.

According to Dustin Senger with D-49 Evans students were taken to the field house at Sand Creek High School.

Evans students were then released to their parents and guardians.

No one was hurt.

Some parents were upset the district took an hour to inform parents about the fire and evacuation. Senger said the district's first priority was to ensure all students were safe and to gather as much information as possible to provide to parents.

According to Senger, eight classrooms are closed, affecting 150-180 students in fifth, first and fourth grade, as well as Head Start students. Students won't be allowed into areas until health concurs are cleared by safety officials.

Transitional Colorado Assessment Program testing was underway. There's one fifth grade science and two third grade math sessions remaining, as well as several makeup tests. All students will be given an opportunity to complete the testing, according to a District 49 news release.
