FOUNTAIN, Colo. -

Fountain police are asking for help to find a suspect in a deadly hit-and-run crash.

Police were called to the area of Fountain Mesa Road and Grand Peak Road shortly before 9 p.m. on Saturday (12/28/13) to investigate a report of an intoxicated man who was walking in front of traffic and was trying to get hit by vehicles.

When they arrived and started searching for the man, police received other calls that a man was seen lying in the middle of the street, about one half a mile away from the original location that was reported.

Police found a man in his early 20s dead on the road.

The Colorado State Patrol says the man who died has been identified as Mikayl D. Jones, 24, from the Colorado Springs area.

An autopsy was performed on Jones on Monday, December 30, 2013. The results are not expected to be available for several weeks.

Police believe Jones was hit by a car and that the car left the scene before police arrived.

By Sunday morning the police tape was gone and the road was open, but neighbors said they wouldn't forget what they saw so close to home.

"The street was blocked off when I got here," said neighbor Jimmie Melan. "I just saw a body lying down in the street face down basically."

"I had heard the ambulance," said neighbor Dolores Carlson. "It's just really, really sad that someone had to lose their life."

Carlson watched police piece together the tragedy through her back window. She said it was a similar story three years ago.

"The person hit a guy on a motorcycle and continued to go on as just left him laying in the street," said Carlson.

Carlson said the news is hard to hear for the neighborhood.

"It's a young person who has barely started their life. It makes it really hard. Even though I don't know him, I feel sympathy for his family," said Carlson.

State Patrol says three teens were interviewed in connection to this investigation. They were then released to their parents.
