Fremont County Clerk arrested for irregular financial activity
FREMONT COUNTY, Colo. - Fremont County Clerk and Recorder Katie Barr was arrested Tuesday and is facing three felony charges and a misdemeanor after police found "irregular financial activity" in her office.
We knew Barr's office was under investigation by Canon City police and the FBI back in September. Barr had temporarily removed herself from the office while the investigation was taking place.
Police haven't described the financial "improprieties" that they say took place.
Fremont County Commissioners say internal safeguards were put in place and a review of every office's cash handling and banking activities has been conducted.
Barr is being held in the Fremont County Jail on a no-bond hold, according to the county.
“We acknowledge this is not a good day for all of Fremont County,” Commissioner Chairman Tim Payne said. “However, the office is open to the public for business as usual.”
The Fremont County Clerk and Recorder's office will remain open under Chief Deputy Clerk Dotty Gardunio's direction.
